Us

Welcome,

Enid, Oklahoma was once rated as one of the top twenty-five places in the United States to raise a child, according to some popular magazine (or so the rumor goes). For those who don't mind wheat, jets (which have cute, young fly-boys within them), being aquainted with everyone in town, and a slight lack of trees, it is a wonderful place to live, but moreover, it is a place to be inspired.

Spilt Beans was created as a tribute to the inspired people of Enid. If you have never thought of Enid as a haven of creativity, you might not be looking in the right places. Ideas lay in wait along the tall grass by the roads. Words stumble upon the rocks in Nine Mile Canyon, brushing with their fingers the layers of ancient rock and clay and the stories that hide within them. In winter, pencils take a break to sled the steep sides of the overpass and of Boggy Creek, which is really just the town dranage ditch. Beauty floats thicker than air on your afternoon neighborhood walks.

Some people say that in Northwest Oklahoma there is nothing to see. I say no, you can see everything.

So maybe it's nostalgia for my childhood home or maybe it's the college senior's need to prove that an English & Writing major is useful, but I believe Enid has a wealth of creativity. Spilt Beans exists to harvest and gather that creativity into book form.

Anyone who lives or has lived in Enid and its surrounding areas may submit fiction, nonfiction, poetry, comics, photography, and art on any subject to spiltbeansmagazine@gmail.com.

So it's you and me and Enid, and I'm asking you to create.
